Abstract:

​This talk will describe recent development of version 7 of CAM (CAM5), and will also discuss historical results, current status and the future of CAM and CESM (the Community Earth System Model) as a high resolution climate model.

CAM5 at a horizontal resolution of 27km has been extensively used in studies of tropical cyclones (TCs) and other tropospheric mesoscale circulations. It produces reasonable climatological statistics for these phenomena and also appears to yield reasonable

representations of individual storm structure. Results from CAM5, including projections of climate change impact on TC distributions will be shown.

CAM7 includes substantial physics changes with respect to CAM5 including a dramatic increase in vertical resolution and model top height. Initial simulations with CAM7 at global resolutions of 27km and 14km have been conducted. These simulations show

promising results including some improvement in TC representation. In addition, the increased vertical resolution and model height in CAM7 have allowed a direct exploration of the impact of resolved gravity waves on the general circulation of the stratosphere.

Finally the talk will show new capabilities for high-resolution CAM including spectral nudging and ultra-high resolution kilometer scale simulations.
