Abstract:

During the last decades, the heliospheric studies significantly contributed to our understanding of how solar storms affect the space weather of Earth. It is now timely to extend the Sun-Earth connection study to the long-term evolution and to the other planets and other stars. Of particularly interest is to understand how solar storms may have affected the habitability of Earth and Mars in the long term, and how superstorms from a magnetically-active star affect the habitability of an exoplanet orbiting around the star. Resolving these two relevant problems are intimately related to revealing the fundamental principle and diversity of dynamo process in a variety of stars, planets and satellites. My talk will start with the comparison between Earth and Mars to illustrate the importance of the magnetic activity of a star in the habitability of a planet. Then I will talk about the Carrington event to illustrate how a super solar storm may affect the habitability as well as the space weather. Finally, I will introduce our recent studies attempting to resolve the missing-CME problem in stellar storms on other stars, especially on young sun-like stars, based on BOES (Bohyeonsan Optical Echelle Spectrogaph) observations. We expect our studies to contribute to a thorough understanding of the planetary habitability which requires the integrated view of the whole system covering stellar dynamos,  stellar storms, heliosphere (astrospheres), planetary magnetospheres, planetary atmospheres, planetary oceans, planetary dynamos, and planetary interiors in astronomical time scales.
