Abstract: Water transport in subduction zones plays a critical role in intraslab earthquakes, arc magma generation, and mass exchange between Earth’s surface and interior, including the deep volatile cycle. Our ability to predict these processes hinges on understanding the mechanisms that govern how much water is recycled into the mantle versus how much is released as water-rich fluids from the subducting slab—and how those fluids migrate from the slab to the volcanic arc and ultimately to the surface. Despite their significance, numerical simulations addressing these mechanisms remain limited and are continually being refined. In the first part of this presentation, I will discuss a recent reassessment of water-transfer budgets in subduction zones, emphasizing the importance of incorporating realistic petrological models for the subducting serpentinized mantle. One of our major findings is that globally, only about 10% of subducted water may be retained up to mid-upper mantle depths.In the second part, I will present two-phase flow models of fluid migration within the mantle wedge. These models indicate that spatial variations in mantle permeability and viscosity significantly influence fluid pathways, helping to focus slab-derived fluids toward an idealized arc region. Finally, I will introduce our ongoing efforts on evaluating the role of upper-lithospheric structures in further channeling fluids and melts from the mantle wedge to the surface. |
