Abstract: The Korean Space Telescope (KST) concept, proposed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), aims to extend proven Earth observation camera technologies toward a wide-field astronomical imaging platform. Over the past decades, KARI has developed a series of high-resolution electro-optical payloads, establishing core expertise in diffraction-limited optical design, precise multi-field alignment, and system-level performance verification through an integrated metrology-based Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) infrastructure. The KST is conceived as a 1.0–1.4 m class wide-field telescope employing a modified Korsch three-mirror anastigmat configuration. The system is optimized for simultaneous visible and near-infrared observations, designed to achieve high image uniformity across a 1° × 0.25° field of view while maintaining manufacturability within existing domestic infrastructure. Its design represents a transition from narrow-swath Earth observation imaging to stable, long-exposure astronomical observation. This presentation outlines the current design status, optical performance evaluation, and fabrication readiness based on measured data from heritage mirror systems. Potential scientific applications, such as large-area galaxy mapping, exoplanet detection, and time-domain astrophysics, are also discussed, emphasizing the importance of coordinated research between engineering and astronomy communities for defining Korea’s next-generation space telescope mission. |
