Abstract:

​​In this general talk, I will give an overview of the Earth's ionosphere and thermosphere system, including its basic structures and well-known anomalies. I will then talk about the atmosphere-ionosphere coupling in terms of dynamical and chemical processes using a few example phenomena such as those occur during Stratosphere Sudden Warming, EN-Nino Southern Oscillation, Earthquakes/Tsunami, increasing CO2 concentration. Finally I will touch on space weather prediction and a personal view of some challenging issues in our current understanding such as interaction between forcing from above and below, scale-dependent processes, cross-scale coupling processes, out-of-the-box extreme events.​​​​
