Title : Galaxy evolution at high redshift protocluster : ALMA view and future prospects

 

Abstract :

A high redshift protocluster is the first place of the most massive structure of the Universe, and it would accompany an early build-up of present-day red-and-dead galaxies. There is no conclusive argument regarding how and when galaxies’ environment plays an important role on the formation and evolution of massive galaxies or never it would. It is crucial to learn about gaseous component because it carries information of ‘current’ fuel for star forming activity and morphological/dynamical status. With this motivation, we study one of the overdense regions of Halpha emitters (HAEs) at z~2.5 that is identified by the narrow-band filter technique using Subaru telescope. We study cold gas properties through the multi-cycle ALMA observations of dust continuum and low/mid CO lines (CO(3-2) and CO(4-3)). From 1.1 mm and CO(3-2) imaging at low resolution (0.7-0.9 arcsec, ~ 7 kpc), we find that the global gas content for massive HAEs (>4e10 Msun) is on average comparable to that of field galaxies (fgas ~ 0.5) at that redshift, but with a tentatively large scatter. The kinematic properties of HAEs are diverse including potential mergers and disk-like galaxies, which are investigated from the higher resolution imaging (~0.4 arcsec) of CO(4-3). One clear disk galaxy has a high value of V/σ (~10) compared to that of high-z field galaxies, which is on average V/σ ~ 3 at z~2. I discuss a potential scenario on these findings that needs confirmation with future observations. I finally present near future plans for protocluster studies using Subaru and ALMA.
