[BK21 Seminar] 일본의 최근 지진 및 화산 활동
제목: 일본의 최근 지진 및 화산 활동 연사: Prof. Junichi Nakajima (Institute of Science Tokyo)
일시: 2025년 6월 13일 금요일 16:30 장소: 과학관 111호 ARC
Abstract: The Japanese Islands are located in a plate-subduction margin where the old Pacific and young Philippine Sea plates are subducting. Due to the subductions of the two oceanic plates, the Japanese Islands are one of the most seismically and volcanologically active areas in the world. Damaging earthquakes include the 1995 Kobe earthquake (M7.3) and the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (M9.1), and volcanic disasters include the eruption of the 2014 Ontake volcano. Last year, the Noto peninsula earthquake (M7.6) occurred on January 1st, 2024, which was the 2nd largest crustal earthquake beneath the Japanese Islands over the past 150 years and caused >500 fatalities. The lateral extent of the fault rupture was inferred to be ~150 km, and the maximum uplift of ~4 m was observed along the northern coastline of the peninsula. I review the tectonic framework of the Japanese Islands and introduce recent major seismic and volcanic activity in Japan.
