Abstract: The weather of the near-Earth space environment is becoming increasingly important due to its impacts on space-based technologies that are used in our everyday lives. For example, space weather can adversely impact GPS navigation signals and significantly influences the trajectories of satellites and space debris. To characterize and ultimately predict these technological impacts, it is critical to advance understanding of the sources driving space weather. The space weather was initially attributed primarily to variations in the Sun. However, it is now widely accepted that the terrestrial weather plays an important role in driving space weather. The effects of terrestrial weather on space weather occur primarily through atmospheric waves that range in scales from global to local. This presentation will provide an overview of the effects of atmospheric waves on the space weather. A particular focus is on how whole atmosphere models, which span from the Earth’s surface to ~500 km, have enabled studies into the impacts of atmospheric tides and gravity waves on the near-Earth space environment. |
