Abstract:

Venus is considered Earth’s twin due to their similar size, mass, and distance from the central star. Before in-situ measurements, researchers expected Venus to be habitable; for example, the low brightness temperature in remote-sensing at the cloud top level is similar to that of the Earth. However, in-situ measurements confirmed the hot surface temperature (~750K) and detected dense atmospheric pressure (100 times that of the Earth). Such a surface environment is harsh for any known life. Venus’s case tells us that clouds can cause misinterpretation of remote sensing data analysis. The current Venus, at least, can be a good reference for identifying similar cloudy terrestrial planets and possible super-rotating atmospheres. In this presentation, I would like to introduce a funded Korean project named “CLOVE (Chasing the Long-term Variability of Our Nearest Neighbor Planet Venus).” Using Earth-orbit CubeSats, our international consortium will monitor Venus for a long period (>10 years). We will acquire Venus disk data at multi-band flux and polarization measurements. We will prepare average solar phase curves and quantify their temporal variability that can be a reference to compare with (cloudy) terrestrial exoplanets.
