Abstract:

Deformation microstructures indeed provide crucial insights into understanding various geological processes, including tectonics, volcanism, faulting, and metamorphic reactions. These microstructures offer valuable information about the conditions, mechanisms, and consequences of rock deformation, contributing to our understanding of Earth's dynamic processes and the evolution of its crust. In this seminar, I present my recent studies about deformation microstructures of blueschist, zircon, and fault rock based on electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis which is a powerful technique used to characterize microstructures at the micro- and nano-scale. First, deformation microstructures of blueschists from Alpine Corsica, France were studied to understand the deformation mechanisms of subducted oceanic crust using EBSD mapping and transmission electron microscopy. Second, the development of microstructural analysis of zircons was investigated using a combination of EBSD and electron microprobe mapping, along with commonly used cathodoluminescence and backscattered electron imaging techniques. Third, deformation microstructures of fault rocks from the Byeokgye section of the Yangsan Fault were studied to reveal slip behaviors including coseismic slip and aseismic creep over seismic cycles.​
