제목: Spatiotemporal dynamics of solute mixing and redox dynamics in riparian floodplains 연사: Prof. Reza Soltanian (University of Cincinnati) 일시: 2023년 10월 13일 금요일 16:00 장소: 과학관 B102호 Abstract: The subsurface zone where river water and groundwater mix, known as the hyporheic zone, is a crucial ecotone that determines hydrologic and geochemical fluxes along river corridors. As water and nutrients interchange through microbially-active sediments, distinct biogeochemical hot spots develop, which are zones of enhanced reaction rates. These hot spots alter the geochemistry within the subsurface due to favorable conditions for the reactions. A comprehensive understanding of the formation and persistence of these hot spots is restricted by our inability to monitor changes in real-time and across multiple dimensions. I will discuss the results of our ongoing monitoring and modeling efforts, such as time-lapse redox sensing and reactive transport modeling, to identify the spatial distribution of geochemically active zones within a riparian floodplain at the Theis Environmental Monitoring and Modeling Site (TEMMS), Ohio, USA. I will highlight how the underlying sediment lithology plays a pivotal role in controlling the spatiotemporal dynamics of solute mixing and redox dynamics. |
