Abstract:

Soil carbon sequestration is a crucial strategy for addressing climate crisis. Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) and mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from soil are two main tasks essential for achieving effective soil carbon sequestration. Significant efforts have been directed toward field-scale observations to optimize management techniques; however, there is a demand or more dedicated research to elucidate the underlying processes at finer scale.

​This presentation emphasizes the importance of investigating “soil pores” to better understand the mechanisms of SOC loss and gains. It will provide several examples of research on soil pore structure, linking the shape, origin, and size of pores to SOC accumulation and GHG emissions. Novel methodologies, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT) and zymography, which have not yet been widely adopted in Korea, are included in the research. Finally, the presentation will suggest future collaborative efforts to enhance research on carbon farming practices and their physicochemical and biochemical mechanisms within the Korean context.
