제목: Scientific Contributions of Atmospheric Radars 연사: Prof. Takuji Nakamura (NIPR, Japan) 일시: 2026년 3월 10일 화요일 16:00 장소: 과학관 B103호
Abstract: Radar is a remote sensing technique to transmit radio waves and receives the signals scattered by the target objects in order to obtain the physical characteristics of the target such as range and target volumes, speed etc. In case of atmospheric radars, the radar target could be clouds/precipitations, tiny fluctuations of atmospheric refractive index (due to turbulence etc.), free electrons etc. Such targets enable to observe/profile wind velocities, temperatures, turbulence parameters etc. with high time and height resolutions. Among these parameters, most useful physical parameter measured by radars is the wind velocities, which includes vertical wind as well as horizontal wind components, providing with important information on atmospheric dynamics such as energy and momentum transport. Since the development of a large aperture VHF atmospheric radar, the MU radar of Kyoto University in Japan built in 1980’s, atmospheric radars have been developed significantly and have been applied to various scientific targets and weather/climate predictions by contributing to the numerical model development. In this seminar, various atmospheric radars, such as MST/IS radars (i.e. VHF radars), meteor radars, MF radars, wind profiles etc. will be introduced and their scientific contributions will be reviewed. Also, we will introduce the lidar technique, i.e. the laser radar technique. |
