Abstract:

​SPHEREx is NASA’s all-sky near-infrared spectroscopic mission designed to map the Universe in the 0.75 - 5 μm range and address key questions in cosmology, galaxy evolution, and the origin of organic ices. Following its launch in 2025, SPHEREx has begun producing the first all-sky spectral maps in 102 wavelength bands, providing an unprecedented view of the infrared sky. In this colloquium, we present early results from SPHEREx, highlighting new insights into the spectral properties of galaxies, the distribution of interstellar dust and Galactic ices, and the identification of organic molecules associated with the interstellar comet. We will also introduce the current status of the proposed far-infrared mission PRIMA (PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics) and discuss its scientific synergy with SPHEREx. By combining SPHEREx’s near-infrared spectral mapping with future far-infrared observations from PRIMA, these missions will enable powerful joint studies of dust-obscured star formation, galaxy–black hole co-evolution, and the chemical evolution of galaxies and planetary systems, providing a comprehensive view of the infrared Universe from the near- to far-infrared.​
