Abstract:

​This presentation examines variations in the Earth’s magnetic field across a wide range of temporal scales using paleomagnetic and archaeomagnetic records. At longer geological timescales, paleomagnetic data from the Korean Peninsula provide constraints on paleogeographic reconstruction and tectonic evolution, offering insights into large-scale continental configurations and their changes through time. At Quaternary timescales, magnetic properties of marine sediments from the Drake Passage are used as an example to investigate variations in sediment sources and depositional environments, highlighting links between climate variability and sedimentary systems. At shorter timescales, archaeomagnetic data from the Korean Peninsula are used to construct a regional paleosecular variation (PSV) record spanning the past several millennia, revealing temporal changes in geomagnetic field direction and providing a basis for identifying rapid directional variations. Extending to much longer timescales, recent paleomagnetic studies of ancient rocks are introduced to illustrate the nature and evolution of the geomagnetic field in the early Earth. Together, these approaches illustrate that geomagnetic field behavior is inherently time-dependent and is best understood through the integration of records across multiple temporal scales.​
