Abstract:

​The continuous exchange of matter between the interstellar medium and stars through star formation and stellar feedback regulates how galaxies grow over cosmic time. In this talk, I will present recent efforts to measure the timescales of the matter cycle by making use of the spatial (de)correlation between molecular clouds, HII regions, dust, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission across nearby galaxies from the PHANGS survey. These statistical measurements reveal that giant molecular clouds are short-lived, transient structures whose lifetimes depend systematically on the galactic environment. I will further show that, while CO and PAH emissions are tightly correlated on average, this correlation breaks down in dynamically complex regions, pointing towards an additional role of large-scale gas flows in enhancing CO emissivity. Finally, I will introduce the MISTY survey of DESI-selected dwarf galaxies, which will deliver the first spatially resolved census of the interstellar medium and star formation in the low-mass, low-metallicity regime.​
