Abstract: Next-generation astronomical telescope technologies are poised to revolutionize our scientific understanding of the Universe in the era of big data, machine learning, and giant rockets. While modern observational astronomy often relies on deep, wide-field imaging and large spectroscopic surveys, conventional étendue alone does not fully capture the holistic information throughput of various optical systems. We introduced a resolution-weighted étendue metric that provides a quantitative basis to design astronomical telescopes enabling big data astrophysics. This metric is particularly vital for evaluating groundbreaking scalable concepts such as the Nautilus Space Observatory, which envisions a very large array of space telescopes utilizing Multi-Order Diffraction Engineered (MODE) optics. Similarly, the SALTUS (Single Aperture Large Telescope for Universe Studies) concept leverages a 14-meter-scale inflatable membrane mirror to achieve unparalleled photon-collecting capacity. Furthermore, the utilization of all-glass metalens offers the potential to revolutionize massive arrays of compact space telescopes. By applying resolution-weighted étendue to these architectures, we can better define how these facilities will produce theobservational big data necessary to redefine and scale the future of astrophysics. |
