Abstract:

​The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that the rate of global mean sea-level rise during the 20th century was the fastest century-scale trend in at least 2000 years. Local relative sea- level reconstructions generated from salt-marsh sediment are the data used to reach this conclusion. Using a case study from Connecticut (Atlantic coast of the northeastern United States) the approach to reconstructing the height and age of relative sea level is explored. During past ~2200 years, relative sea- level rose by ~2.5m in Connecticut. Extrapolating from an inperfect network of proxy reconstuctions to global mean sea level requires understanding of the varied physical processes that cause local relative sea level change. Decomposition of a growing network of sea-level reconstructions demonstrates that a so-called hockey stick exists for global sea level just as it does for temperature.
