Abstract:

One of the most enduring features of Earth’s atmosphere is the jet stream, whose variability visibly affects daily weather and climate. The jet stream also acts as a conduit of large-scale eddies and waves that transport momentum (and through thermal wind balance, heat) and connect different parts of the atmosphere dynamically. In this talk, I will describe recent advances in understanding large meandering of the jet stream from synoptic, sub-seasonal to seasonal timescales. I will cover theoretical foundations as well as application of theory to reanalysis data, using atmospheric blocking and stratospheric sudden warming as examples.
