Abstract:

​Flood risk is increasingly driven by the interaction of climate variability, human activities, coastal change, and urban development. This presentation discusses how NASA modeling capabilities can be used to understand and support decision-making for vulnerable flood-prone regions. The seminar highlights science and application case studies where physically based modeling helps diagnose flood drivers, quantify exposure, and evaluate “what-if” scenarios. 

First, I will discuss how groundwater-fed irrigation in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta affects freshwater scarcity and coastal flood dynamics in one of the world’s most densely populated deltaic regions. Second, I will present ongoing work on compound coastal flooding in the Chesapeake Bay, where hydrology, tides, sea-level rise, vertical land motion, and socioeconomic exposure interact to reshape flood risk in low-lying coastal communities. Third, I will describe the NASA-Rio de Janeiro partnership, where NASA modeling and Earth observation capabilities have been adapted into an urban flood monitoring framework that supports local hazard assessment and operational decision-making. The seminar concludes by discussing how similar approaches could support flood monitoring and forecasting, compound coastal flood assessment, and urban flood monitoring in Korea.
