Abstract:

Space systems are essential and integral in every facet of our daily lives, including national security and resource management. Therefore, it is critical to protect our valuable assets in space through space surveillance and build resiliency in space systems. This presentation discusses an overview of satellite technologies under development at York University that enable space surveillance from a small satellite platform. A key aspect of the research is to develop a low-cost, wide field-of-view (WFOV) optical system for debris detection from space. We have developed a dual-purpose camera system for attitude sensing and Space situational awareness (SSA). We created a star tracker prototype for space surveillance and demonstrated the concept on the Stratos Balloon in 2022 and 2023. This year, we are extending this research to develop a more compact camera system capable of real-time image processing in challenging lighting conditions. An overview of the 2025 mission, the detailed design of the SSA image analysis process, and the results from previous missions are presented.

Based on the experience gained from the past Stratos missions, three Low Earth Orbit (LEO) SSA mission concepts are also proposed to advance space-based, space surveillance using optical imagers: (1) LEO mission with WFOV imager in stare mode operation (preferably in REM-facing attitude), (2) VLEO mission to track re-entry objects and (3) a LEO mission to track interested objects in both GEO and LEO for catalogue update, using NEOSSat example.​​
