Abstract:

This presentation addresses the connection between rising temperatures and temperature-related mortality across 106 American cities. It is frequently argued in the public debate that warmer winters might lead to net benefits from climate change, our findings paint a more complex picture. As the U.S. population grows and ages, the number of deaths linked to temperature is set to rise. As far as temperature goes, up to a certain point, warmer temperatures could actually reduce the overall number of temperature-related deaths. This is because milder winters could result in fewer cold-related deaths, offsetting the increase in heat-related fatalities. However, if global temperatures rise more than 3°C, the scales tip, and any benefits are overwhelmed by the damages of extreme heat. The geography of this impact is also important: cities in the South fare better due to their existing adaptability to heat, while Northern cities could become new hotspots for temperature-related deaths. So, while the overall numbers might not change dramatically, where and how these deaths occur will shift, bringing the consequences of climate change literally closer to home for many Americans.​
