Abstract:

In 2015, the Advanced LIGO detectors successfully made the very first direct detection of gravitational waves. The most important contribution that made this detection possible was the detector upgrade to the Advanced LIGO, such as quadruple pendulum systems, and monolithic fused silica final stage suspensions. To further improve the sensitivity of the detectors, world-wide collaborations are working on various experimental and modelling work. Among all research efforts, two branches of experimental work will be introduced: suspension thermal noise and coating Brownian noise. Enhanced suspension system investigation will be introduced as a part of suspension thermal noise reduction research, and atomic structure study for the coatings will be introduced as a part of coating Brownian noise reduction research. Furthermore, brief status updates of most recent research work will be presented along with future plans.​
